Complex Fluids

From cosmetic creams and mayonnaise to saliva and hair gels, complex fluids are everywhere. Their internal microstructure changes as they flow, creating remarkable mechanical behaviour. Some emulsions, for example, only flow beyond a critical stress, explaining why creams stay in place even when turned upside down.

In the Soft Matter group, we explore how microscopic structure shapes the mechanical properties of fluids and their behaviour at larger scales. Our research spans liquid jets and sprays, droplet coalescence, nanoscale wetting, and the physics of splashing droplets.

Drops and sprays

From inkjet printing to fine sprays, the motion and breakup of liquid droplets shape countless everyday processes. But how do droplets influence one another, how

Dynamics of complex fluids

How can we make agricultural spraying more effective while reducing its environmental impact? Tiny droplets can drift away in the wind, while others bounce straight

Emulsion stability and rheology

What makes mayonnaise thick, cosmetics stable, or paint flow smoothly? The answer often lies in emulsions: tiny droplets of one liquid suspended in another, whose
