Fragmentation and brittleness of materials is a very broad and also a very important subject. Many processes induce the production of cracks and the formation of fragments. Among which are the fracture of brittle objects due to thermal stresses, impact fragmentation, industrial crushing, explosions, but also the spraying of fluids is a fragmentation process. Fragmentation (in solids) happens at a very small time scale, since cracks propagate on the order of $10^{3}\; m/s$. This makes direct research on the phenomenon difficult and one usually has to rely on the study of the fragments themselves. In this project we currently investigate the fragmentation of stressed glass (like tempered glass and prince Rupert's drops), but also the break up of fluids by surface acoustic waves.

Goals

  • Determining the distribution of fragment sizes for varies materials and shapes.
  • Finding out what affects the break up of fluids in the case of surface acoustic waves nebulizers using interdigital transducers (wave form, temperature, shape and size of the fluid sitting on the surface, etc.).
